Tricks Sing High Notes

Feathers: To learn how to sing your full range, you may experience cracking in your voice. To solve this problem is to lighten up on the trouble notes let the notes float. The reason that the notes crack is the membranes and muscles do not have the “memory” required to do the transition you need. Sing through the breaks, do not stop otherwise a habit of doing so will develop.

Increase the air speed: Increase the air speed for the high notes, decrease air speed on the lower. The reason is this, different frequency has certain air speed to produce the best tone. Let your ears tell you that the balance is achieved. The tone should be clear pure and clear.

Tense jaws: Stretch the jaws and face before singing to make sure the jaws and face are relaxed. That is because if they are tense they will prevent you hitting those high notes. One way to tell if you are breathing correctly is that your chest isn’t moving, your belly is. Never strain or hurt your voice. It helps to drink water to keep the vocal cords hydrated.

Use your diaphragm: If you breath by using your belly muscles then you are only half of your resources. Cutting into the power that the back muscles can provide. To properly breath, fill the abdomen, feel the expansion all around including the back. Then “compress the air” which will support the vocal release. This caused by lifting the diaphragm up from the center of the body. One way to tell if you are breathing correctly is that your chest isn’t moving, your belly is.

Vowel modification: every one has particular vowels that work best for them when they sing “above the staff.” When you learn the vowels that work for you then you can practice modifying the vowels as you go up the scale.

A good way to sing high notes is to start with singing as low as possible. This allows your vocal cords to stretch so that when you go to sing the higher notes you can increase the range you can sing. Caution though don’t strain your voice when you are singing below your normal range because you voice will crack preventing you from hitting the higher notes.

An easy test to see if you are singing the high notes properly is to put a finger on the voice box in other words your larynx then you sing up the scale to tell whether if your voice box moves higher up the neck. This is the wrong way. Another way is to hold your tongue and sing, this to tell if your tongue gets in the way. If your throat hurts the best way to help that is to drink peppermint tea with lemon juice and honey.

Put Music Into Your Life

Music is said to be a manifestation of the soul, in such a way that it ignites various emotions on humans. The brain of a human being reacts to the stimuli of the environment, and the sense of hearing is able to perceive sound in a way that makes a person feel various sensations throughout his whole system. The guitar, being an easily accessible and versatile instrument, has taken the interest of many; but not everyone can easily comprehend the way it is played. A little background on music would be really helpful in learning how to play this instrument, and here are some few things you might want to know.

Guitars are stringed instruments: the tension developed on the strings attached to the instrument causes a vibration that travels through waves and perceived by the ears as sound. This sound can be varied by varying the wavelengths that the sound travels in; hence, changing the tension on the strings would create different sounds. This particular method is termed as “tuning”, wherein the strings are adjusted to a particular setting to match the notes in music.

The standard tuning of a guitar has its strings tuned to the notes (from top string to bottom string): E, A, D, G, B, and E. Note that the last string is two octaves higher than the first E string, and so it completes the pattern that most guitars have. Other types of guitars have a different number of strings (such as the six-string variants and the four-stringed bass guitar), but basically the same method goes when it comes to tuning the instrument.

The “neck” of the guitar is the elongated part of the instrument where you would place your fingers as you play it. This is then divided into “frets” which are basically the partitions you would see on the neck (the dividers usually look like a thin strip of wood or metal placed vertically at particular distances from each other). To create the “tension” needed for a specific note, you must press the string firmly on the correct place.

In a guitar music book, you would be able to learn how to play the basic chords that are used in most songs. Chords are “patterns” that you must follow to play a certain sound on the guitar. You would be able to create specific sounds by placing your fingers in the respective frets that the patterns indicate. And so, you can proceed to playing the songs that you like, and many of your all-time favorites can also be presented to you by a guitar music book.

Read Guitar Music

Perhaps the very first thing that a guitar player should know, aside from the parts of the guitar, is how to read guitar music the right way. As we all know, this can only be made possible if the player knows how to read guitar chords from a chart. This is the only way that one person can read through the tabs, play them, and see if the guitar music is right or wrong.

Learning how to read guitar chords is the only way to learn how to play guitar. Being able to do so saves someone the hassle of looking for another person just to ask for information. In time, after learning how to read guitar music, one can easily say that what he has on the magazine guitar chart for a certain song is wrong. He can then move on to changing it and in turn, tech his friends the right chords for playing a song.

The standard way of displaying the correct guitar chord is through a guitar diagram. A guitar chord diagram is made of a drawn square or rectangle with six lines, representing the six strings of a guitar. The squares are segregated into bars and these are the representations of the guitar frets. The way guitar chords are displayed is inverted, as if looking at the mirror. Keep in mind that at the left hand section of the drawing, you will find a thick line, which symbolizes the n of the guitar’s neck, where the tuning nuts are.

The places where you need to press the strings are symbolized by dots. If a dot is found at the second fret at the third string, this means that you need to press that string at that exact location. There is also a proper way of pressing the strings in terms of what fingers to use. On top of the drawing, you will see numbers form 1-4. The number on top of a dot tells you what finger to use. This means that if the number two is used or a dot located at the second fret on the third string, you have to use your middle finger to press that chord at that location.

How to read guitar music may not be an easy challenge to many. This is more aggravated by the fact that for beginners, they may think they are pressing the right chord but they cannot produce the right sound. Patience is always a key to learning how to play the guitar. No one can really learn how to play the guitar overnight. It may take days to master even just a single chord.

Singing Harmony

Since singing harmony is so important to your career, one of the first things you need to learn as a singer is how to harmonize. Fortunately, there are lots of really good exercises out there that help you master the vital skill of singing harmony.

The first step in learning how to harmonize is one that you’ve probably already mastered and been using for most your life. Simply listen to music. That’s right, sit down and listen to songs. When you listen to music, pay careful attention and try to identify the instruments and notes being used. Listen to the singers and try to figure out which pitches they are using. Have a pad and pen with you and write down the notes and instruments that you think you hear. Taking notes is a great way to develop your powers of concentration.

One great way to improve your listening skills is to listen to a wide variety of music including genres you normally don’t listen to. This helps you develop some discipline and teaches you how to pay attention. A good way to learn to harmonize with instruments is to listen to instrumental music. The key to singing harmony is to be able to quickly identify what instrument is being played and synchronize your voice to it.

If you play an instrument like a guitar or the piano, try and sing and play that instrument at the same time. Use that instrument when you practice your singing. This way, you’ll get used to singing harmony with an instrument. When you do this, record your practice and listen to it so that you’ll be able to tell if you’re actually singing harmony.

If you don’t play an instrument, you can always sing in harmony to instrumental music when you practice. Simply trying to sing along with instrumental music is a great way of learning to sing harmony.

Since the objective of singing harmony is to learn how to sing with others, whether they are other singers or musicians, sooner or later you’ll have to start practicing singing with others. The best way to do this is to join a band or singing group and work with them on a regular basis. If you can’t find such a group or band then organize one yourself.

If you want to learn to sing rock, country or jazz the best way of learning singing harmony is with a band. Fortunately, there are lots of bands out there and some of them do work with singers. Amateur or professional bands may let you join them or jam with them especially if you’re willing to cover part of the costs.

Relaxation Techniques For Singers

This applies to singing in several ways. Often we know we are too tense, but when we try to relax, it just gets worse. The major tension places for singers are:

• The jaw. Actually the two places where the jaw hooks to the skull at the ears.Tension in this area should be approached by saying to yourself “my jaw feels like rubber. It loose, hanging – like I had a shot at the dentist’s. Then your suggestion to yourself is a positive action. You’re not saying to “relax”, but rather to do something which will cause relaxation. Also, wiggling the jaw slightly during rests helps a lot.

• The neck and shoulders. Develop the habit of gently rolling your head occasionally when you feel tension coming on. The same for shoulders. Keep moving up there.

• The back. Tension in the back is often caused by poor posture. Get that spine straight. You don’t have to look like a tin soldier, but be aware that tension can collect there and hurt your singing.

Uniqueness in Your Voice

1. Focus on a specific type of audience. You cannot expect to please everybody. You must have a specific market where you are selling yourself. Different groups have different taste in music. Groups can be categorized by age – teenagers, pre-teens, oldies, young adults, or children. They can also be by gender – male, female, or even from the gay community. You must have at least one specific target group that you want to sell yourself to. Focus on what this group likes and adjust your craft to their taste.

2. Research on other styles. All singers have a preferred genre to listen to. Their preferred music is also usually the music they like to sing. In order to explore more on your musicality, listen to other genre and try them out. You might be surprised that you’re better at another genre – one that you least prefer listening to.

3. Modify your style. Play with your vocals and put a trademark sound. You can modify it by either putting more vibrato to it. If you already are good with vibrato, try putting your vibrato at the end of each phrase you sing instead of all throughout. You can experiment on mix and matching the different styles that you’ve researched on.

4. Present a unique character. A singer is not only known for his or her voice but also his or her character. Present a character that will make you memorable. You can be a punk on your appearance but be charitable in public. Or you can be angelic in appearance and vocal technique but have a diva attitude on stage. Even negative characters can make good publicity if it’s really worth noticing. Remember, bad publicity is still publicity. Why do you think Britney got so many media reviews? Of course, the good characters are the most loved but nonetheless, it’s not love that producers are after, it’s your ability to gather crowds to yourself.

5. Have a trademark fashion style. By this I do not mean going crazy on your fashion sense. No. You don’t need to be extravagant nor weird. You simply have to have something that is trademark on you that people will remember you when they see that object. It may be a scarf, or a special hat, or neckties, or certain shoes, or certain makeup style, or even a consistency in the color you wear. It should be something that every time people see you, you wear it. They will associate that object to your name in the long run.

Spanish Flamenco Guitar

“Flamenco” is the name most widely associated with Spanish music. And although it is definitely part of that country’s culture, it’s native only to the Southern region of Andalucia. However this does’nt mean that if you’re not born in Andalucia, you can’t be a “genuine” Flamenco artist! There have been, and continue to be, many contributors from other regions and other countries. Most notably Latin America and Cuba.

Originally, Flamenco was the music of the Andalucian gypsies. And, understandably, those who grew up around them were called “Flamencos.”

Just as this style of Spanish music was result of centuries of influence and “cross pollination” by and from Byzantine and Moorish influences, the same is true for the evolution of the Spanish Guitar.

Cross Pollination

After the Islamic invasion of Spain in 711, the region of what we today know as Cordoba, became a center for Islamic musicians. Who were obviously influenced by the local music. The first phase of the guitars’ evolution was the addition of a fifth string to the Islamic Oud. The resulting instrument was the Andalucian “Nuba.” More commonly referred to as the “Moorish Guitar.”

Centuries later, elements of this instrument combined with the European Lute and the Guitar Latina created the Vihuela. This became the basis for the Baroque guitar, which, in turn, morphed into the Classical guitar. Finally, the Flamenco guitar was born. A variation of it’s Classical “cousin.”

Microphone Singing

Be aware of you’re the volume your are singing at and your proximity to the microphone. Ideally you want the microphone to be as hot as possible without causing distortion. Naturally that means if you are hitting a loud high note, you need to back away from the mic. How much you need to back off the microphone really depends on the singer. It takes a little practice to know. This holds true in the recording studio as well as on stage. Although producers can correct the problem, they would rather have a singer who can work the microphone.

Singing on pitch into a microphone takes some practice, especially if you are recording with headphones on so that the playback is not rerecorded as well. An old trick is to take one head phone of so that you can hear you voice as you are used to hearing it. On stage, you have to get used to the minor delay, and difference from when you hear yourself. The sound has to travel further to get back to you. That is why it is so important to have a monitor. Sound is very directional. If you cannot hear yourself, even the best singer can go off key. It happened to Kelly Clarkson in the super bowl a couple of years ago, and she is not the type of singer you would expect to go flat.

studio singing is much different that singing live. It’s the details that matter. The timing, perfect pitch, expression, even if you have all of these while you normally practice, you are under a microscope when you are singing in the studio, and every major flaw gets exposed. The best tool to overcome this is practice. The more time you spend in the studio, the better you will become. It will also make you a better singing if you have a good pitch recognition. Hearing your voice dry and magnified causes you to become more on point and acute to what you really sound like.

Make sure that microphone is level with your mouth or slightly higher. You do not want to have to tilt your neck down or you air flow will be restricted and you will lose tone.

Concept Of Rhythm

Pitch expresses the relative “height” or “depth” of a sound. Once we know how to listen to the note played and recognize the concept of height and depth in a note, only then will we be able to understand the concept of the rhythm required to play a particular piece of music.

It is important to stress now that pitch is a fixed and permanent system of values, while rhythm is a relatively flexible one, which cannot function without some degree of interpretation.

In order to understand the relationship between the length of a note, it is necessary to explain the function of the pulse or beat of the music.

The pulse or beat provides the basic structure around which the rhythm is built. The speed of the pulse will differ from piece to piece, and often varies within a piece of music. This all depends on how the composer has written it, or it can also be altered by the performer to suit their musical skill.

Rhythm values fall into two categories – simple and compound. If learning to read music notation it is only necessary to comprehend the visual difference.

When written the compound value of a note is followed by a small dot, whereas simple values are not.

It is also very important to understand the simple system fully and comprehensively because the compound system is based upon it.

The reason for this is both have an equally important function in music notation.

For example, if you are learning to read music you will be told there are six simple basic values in common usage. Here is the terminology used to describe the relative lengths of the different symbols.

A semibreve sounds twice as long as a minim which sounds twice as long as a crotchet, which sounds twice as long as a quaver, which sounds twice as long as a semiquaver, which sounds twice as long as demisemiquaver.
